Petty Officer Quarles enlisted in the United States Navy on 21 February 1996 and reported for active duty on 21 August 1996 at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, IL. Upon successful sailorization, he reported to Service School Command, Great Lakes, IL for Advanced Electronics and Fire Control man Class “A” School where he graduated with distinguished honor, number one in his class. He then reported to AEGIS Training Center, Dahlgren, VA for AEGIS Radar System AN/SPY-1B/D Operation and Maintenance. He reported to his first duty station, USS PAUL HAMILTON (DDG 60) Pearl Harbor, HI from 31 December 1997 to 12 December 2002 where he was awarded: Two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals for professional performance of his duties as a SPY Technician, a Flag Letter of Commendation, two Navy Unit and Meritorious Unit Commendations, the Navy “E” Ribbon, and National Defense Service Medal, two Good Conduct Medals, two Armed Forces Expeditionary Medals, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, three Sea Service Deployment Ribbons, the Expert Pistol Shot Medal, Marksman Rifleman Ribbon and Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist.
He was assigned as the Leading Petty Officer of CF Division, AEGIS MK7 Systems Coordinator and SPY Technician. His collateral duties included: CSTT Technical Drill Package Coordinator and 2M Technician. He also qualified as In port Officer of the Deck and advanced to Fire Control man First Class.
On 28 January 2003 he reported to Surface Combat Systems Center, Wallops Island, VA. During his highly successful tour he was awarded: A third Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for serving as Test Director and Combat Systems Duty Officer, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, two Letters of Appreciation, and a third Good Conduct Medal.
He was assigned as a Combat Systems Duty Officer and his collateral duties were SPY Technician and 2M Technician. He qualified as Officer of the Day, Combat Systems Officer of the Watch, and Navy Shift Supervisor.
He was to be honorably discharged from the United States Navy on 17 July 2006.
